Just a quick update on the Bellahouston Academy Hotel Planning Application - 08/02691/DC
For those of you who are not aware, the council has received a proposal to build a hotel in the place of the old Bellahouston Academy swimming pool and gym annex. The consultation is still taking place which means that you have every right to go and see the proposal and object if you want. So far, 309 objections to the proposal have been received and they are still accepting more...
These are the main objections to the plans for the hotel development (application 08/02691):
"1. Contrary to the Development Plan
The Council’s Development Plan states that 3.3 The development strategy emphasises the reconnection of the social, physical and economic fabric of Glasgow. At its heart, is a commitment to achieving the highest possible outcomes through design standards and development policies. I believe this proposal offers nothing to the local community and shows no evidence of a wider development policy.
2. Appearance
I regard the above proposal as unfitting for the residential area within which it has been proposed. The hotel is to be constructed beside a grand baronial-style B-listed school and bears no relationship to either this or the surrounding tenements in its massing or material. It looks cheap and nasty.
3. Traffic, parking and access problems
Parking, access and traffic in this area is already an issue for residents due to commuters seeking free parking prior to subway travel and football at Ibrox stadium. Increased traffic flow for a development such as this can only worsen the situation. Access to the site is proposed by way of the quiet residential North Gower Street which already suffers considerable parking and congestion issues. Many school children use this road as a primary route to school and I believe this traffic would be extremely hazardous.
4. Residential amenity
The hotel rooms look directly into many residents homes on Clifford Street. This is a very serious privacy issue for residents. The increase in noise and disturbance would be substantial due to guests arriving at all hours.
5. Effect on Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas
The development suggests no renovation or re-use of the B-listed Bellahouston Academy. I believe a degree of responsibility should be assumed with purchase of such a historical building which has been at the heart of the community for many years and that this should be addressed before any new building be permitted on the site.
The community itself needs a focus as more and more of the facilities (eg primary schools and soon our nursery) are wrenched from us."
Although the target date for a council meeting was on the 4th March, the committee still haven't met to make a decision.
